2048 — The Addictive Number Merging Puzzle

Created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014, 2048 became one of the most viral browser games ever made. Slide tiles across a 4×4 grid, merge matching numbers, and work toward the elusive 2048 tile. Simple rules, deep strategy.

How to Play 2048

  • Press any arrow key (or swipe on mobile) to slide all tiles in that direction.
  • Two tiles with the same number merge into one tile showing their sum.
  • After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty spot.
  • Reach the 2048 tile to win — then keep going for even higher tiles!
  • The game ends when the board is full and no more merges are possible.

Game Features

  • 4×4 grid with color-coded tiles from 2 to 2048+
  • Smooth pop animation on new tile spawns
  • Score tracks all merged tile values
  • Win at 2048 with option to continue beyond
  • Arrow keys, WASD, and touch swipe support
  • Local best score saved between sessions

Tips to Reach 2048

1. Pick a corner and stick to it

Place your highest tile in one corner (e.g. top-left) and never move it. Build a descending chain of tiles away from it.

2. Never swipe toward your corner

If your highest tile is top-left, avoid swiping right or down. Only swipe left and up to keep the high tile locked in place.

3. Build a snake chain

Arrange tiles in a snake pattern: the highest tile in the corner, decreasing in value as you snake across rows. This maximises merge opportunities.

4. Don't chase every merge

Merging every possible pair as it appears can disrupt your chain. Think two or three moves ahead.

Your best score is saved in local storage and shown at the top. The board state is not saved between sessions — if you close the tab, the game resets.
